Empowering Health: How Step-In Fosters Physical Well-Being for Young Girls

Step-In recognizes the importance of physical well-being, the third pillar of our curriculum, as a core component of the afterschool program. Through thoughtfully designed lessons and activities, we promote an active and healthy lifestyle, encouraging girls to take ownership of their physical health.

Our approach to supporting each student’s physical well-being begins with discussions that explore the connection between mind and body. We teach the girls how physical activity strengthens muscles, heart, and lungs while also relieving stress, enhancing mood, improving focus, and aiding sleep. Our curriculum emphasizes the idea that “movement is medicine” throughout the program.

Building on this understanding, the curriculum offers numerous opportunities for physical activity, including relay races, obstacle courses, jump roping, frisbee, hopscotch, basketball, kickball, jumping jacks, and squats. Each day, girls have the option to enjoy unstructured time outdoors.

In addition to physical activities, the Step-In Program incorporates lessons on mindfulness and meditation as they relate to overall well-being. Yoga sessions are held outdoors, allowing for physical relaxation, mindfulness, and body awareness, all of which contribute to improved physical health.

Nutrition is another essential aspect of our focus on physical well-being. One afternoon each week is dedicated to discussing the importance of healthy foods, during which students try different nutritious snack options to build a positive association with healthy eating. The girls also take a field trip to the Young Chefs Academy, where they learn basic cooking skills, empowering them to take greater ownership of their physical health.

The long-term benefits of prioritizing physical well-being are numerous. Research shows that physical activity reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression and is positively correlated with improved academic performance. When girls succeed in physical activities, their self-esteem and confidence grow, enhancing their overall sense of self-worth.

Step-In also recognizes the social and developmental benefits of physical activity. Our activities support the girls’ social skills, teamwork, cooperation, and leadership, while providing a space for them to practice verbal communication and problem-solving skills. These experiences encourage the girls to believe in themselves and their abilities.

Long-term, students who prioritize their physical well-being often experience fewer health issues and enjoy a higher quality of life. The Step-In Program empowers girls to make healthy choices and emphasizes the importance of lifelong wellness habits.

By nurturing both the minds and bodies of our students, the Step-In Program is committed to fostering informed, health-conscious young women. Through our program, we ensure students understand the vital role that physical health plays in leading a balanced, fulfilling life.
